Motorhome
A motor home (also known as motor coach or motor caravan) is generally an enclosed vehicle designed to be used both as a temporary travel home and a motor vehicle. However, motor homes, although often referred to as RVs (recreational vehicles) or camper vans, are indeed used in many localities as homes or full-time living places. In fact, there are several so-called trailer parks or motor home communities in the USA, the UK, and other developed countries.
The Motorhome
Nowadays, motor homes or mobile homes are used not only for brief leisure tours and camping trips but also in business as mobile offices. In these instances, the motor home will usually be customized to have special amenities such as a reinforced electrical system with auxiliary generator set, satellite TV and internet system, and extra space for office furniture.
A basic RV features beds, a table, small kitchen and a storage area. Larger models include a full bathroom, a master bedroom, living area, and a refrigerator. Luxury models add more amenities like a built-in treadmill or special marble flooring, slide-out sections and awnings.

People who live full-time in RVs generally do so as a lifestyle decision rather than out of financial lack. According to statistics, most RV users sell their homes to buy RVs that cost as much as their homes did. Some RV users return to owning houses again. The majority of RV owners, though, only want to be well-equipped when mobile. They want the freedom not possible with staying in motel rooms, the convenience of preparing food that they prefer or that better meets their dietary preferences or restrictions, and the comfort of familiar and better organized living quarters.
Home on the Field
Aside from the common types of motor homes, there are lesser-known configurations that have come into use to better match users’ preferences:
- Bus conversion—usually the largest and most highly customized motor homes available
- Travel trailer of caravan—designed to be towed by a larger vehicle with a bumper hitch
- Fifth-wheel trailer—designed to be towed by a pickup truck with a special hitch known as a fifth-wheel coupler, in such a way that the combined length of the truck and trailer is shortened by letting part of the trailer body extend over the truck bed
- Toy hauler—a type of travel trailer that is part living space and part garage for storing motorcycles, ATVs, bikes, etc.
